Whats at stake?
The California Game and Fish biologists are VERY familiar with Benzakonium Chloride; they conducted studies on the New Zealand Mudsnail using the compound. They probably use some form of it to disinfect hatchery equipment. I really need to stress that the Quagga mussel is the MOST invasive of the mussels. It will out compete and suffocate most other mussels including the Zebra mussel. That point needs to be IMPRINTED on the minds of ALL California anglers. Anglers are going to have to demonstrate that they are serious about preventing the spread of these mussels. We are taking the position that anglers do care about the fisheries and their impact on the fisheries. Bottom line to all of this for anglers is that if the Quagga mussel becomes established with heavy populations, it will DESTROY the bass fishery. The fisheries around the Great Lakes are not doing so well. The combined mussel infestation along with the VHSV has taken fax 830-372-1824 a BIG toll on the smallmouth fishery. We make a product called, “Net Guard” it contains HIGH levels of the Benzakonium Chloride. That product can be used to disinfect nets and livewells, but the concentrations are too strong to use around public waters. It will kill everything, and I mean everything! You must rinse it out, but it is better than household bleach and is not corrosive to pumps, etc.
